Stuart Kaufman was born in 1926 in Brooklyn, NY. He studied painting at Pratt Institute and at the Art Student's League (both in Manhattan).

Among his awards, Stuart received the Guri Seaver Memorial Prize from the Art Institute of Chicago, the George R. Beach Prize from the Montclair Museum and the Society of Illustrators Award. His work has appeared in many one-man and group exhibitions, including at the A. C. A. Gallery, Davis Galleries, and Hirschl & Adler Galleries (all in New York City), the Art Institute of Chicago, the Newark Museum, Kenmore Galleries in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, and the San Diego Museum of Fine Arts. Stuart's paintings are part of the collections of the Metropolitan Museum in Manhattan, the Newark Museum and the Minneapolis Museum of Art.
